Who is Cher?
Cher, born Cherilyn Sarkisian in El Centro, California, is a singer and actress whose career has run from mid-1960s folk pop to disco, arena rock, dance and film. She first reached a mass audience as half of Sonny and Cher, the duo she formed with Sonny Bono, whose 1965 single I Got You Babe topped charts internationally and whose CBS variety series The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour ran from 1971. After the duo separated she built a solo career across several decades, winning an Academy Award for Best Actress for Moonstruck in 1988 and returning to the top of the charts in 1998 with Believe. She is one of the few performers to have scored number one singles in six consecutive decades.
